Overview
This year’s Spring Lecture Series theme is Edge: Harbor and City.
Waterfront Partnership’s Healthy Harbor Initiative has set a goal of a swimmable and fishable Inner Harbor. What could this look like? Speakers will reflect on, illustrate, define, and/or re-define the edges where land and water meet. In coordination with the Baltimore journal T3XTURE, this year’s lecture series will introduce a design competition that invites Maryland architecture firms to submit design concepts that explore the edge of the harbor and city.

About the program
The speakers will discuss design at the harbor and city edge in both planned and unplanned contexts. Daniel Campo, PhD, Program Director and Associate Professor at Morgan State University, will discuss the Baltimore and Brooklyn waterfront and reference his book, The Accidental Playground: Brooklyn Waterfront Narratives of the Undesigned and Unplanned, which explores the remarkable landscape created by individuals and small groups who occupied and rebuilt an abandoned waterfront edge, and suggests a radical reimagining of urban parks and public spaces, and the practices by which they are created and maintained.
Barbara Wilks, FAIA, FASLA, Principal at W Architecture and Landscape Architecture, will discuss her firm’s waterfront work in various locations, including Baltimore, which addresses places where city and nature come together and forms new relationships, and how well-designed places can result in more sustainable relationships between ourselves, our communities, and the earth.
Speaker bios
Daniel Campo is a Program Director and Associate Professor at Morgan State University’s Graduate Program in City & Regional Planning. He earned a BA from the State University of New York at Binghamton, a MUP from the Hunter College of the City University of New York, and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in City and Regional Planning where he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Urban Research. His interests and experience include Urban Planning and Design, Public Space Studies, Downtown and Waterfront Planning, and Placemaking among others. He has published several works including A New Postindustrial Nature: Remembering the Wild Waterfront of Hunters Point South, and The Accidental Playground: Brooklyn Waterfront Narratives of the Undesigned and Unplanned.
Barbara Wilks, FAIA, is a leader in design and interdisciplinary thinking, with over 40 years of experience in urban design, public, and institutional projects. After graduating from Cornell University, Barbara worked for the City of Baltimore in the mid 1970’s. Her interest in waterfronts led to integrating water and land on the Baltimore harbor as well as along the Chesapeake Bay. In 1974, she founded Cho/Wilks Architects and created award winning post-industrial waterfronts such as Canton Cove. After receiving a Masters of Landscape Architecture from University of Pennsylvania in 1993, she founded her new interdisciplinary firm in New York in 1999. Barbara is one of the few professionals elected to both the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (in 1999) and to the College of Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects (in 2010). Her projects range from urban public spaces, infrastructure, architecture, to parks, with her goal being to use design to create access and a means of participation—a public route to discovery, engagement and stewardship.

Lectures are held at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Falvey Hall of the Brown Center.

Parking:
100 free parking spots will be available in the RK&K parking lot at 81 W Mosher St, Baltimore. The lot is located at the east end of Mosher Street, one block east of Mt. Royal Avenue and accessible from the northbound lane only. The lot will close at 9pm.
