OVERVIEW
This presentation will discuss a planner’s role in addressing climate change with a breakdown of the following topics during the discussion:
Climate change and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed
A planners role in addressing climate change
Addressing sea level rise, bigger storms/more rainfall, species habitat and wildlife corriders
Strategies for large landscape conservation
How to avoid a new wave of residential sprawl
This presentation will delve into the past, present, and future of climate and climate changes over time with emphasis on the recent changes with weather. Review of the impacts and addressing needed changes to existing regulations plus putting in place new regulations.
The local government, planning office, and planners need to forge a relationship with farmers, citizens, and the development community to put regulations in place that will promote protection and preservation of sensitive areas and watersheds and avoid sprawl of development.
SPEAKERS
Greg Bowen
Greg Bowen is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners with over 40 years experience in planning, land preservation, and public policy. Mr. Bowen worked for the Calvert County Department of Planning and Zoning for 32 years, the last six as its Director. During that time, he oversaw the land preservation program, which featured the first transferable development rights program in Maryland, along with two county purchase of development rights programs and three state easement programs. In 2006, he led efforts to rewrite the county zoning ordinance to permit agri-tourism, eco-tourism, heritage tourism uses, and value-added production on farms. In 2011, he formed Land Stewardship Solutions LLC with a focus on land preservation and programs to help farmers throughout the state of Maryland. As part of that work, he studied the land preservation programs and zoning in all of the counties in Maryland. In 2015, he became Executive Director of the American Chestnut Land Trust. Greg is a lifetime resident of Calvert County, Maryland growing up on a farm near the Patuxent River.
